Parkie Nation

February 2, 2013 By: PerkyParkie4 Comments

This is the start of an exciting time!  This is the first post of a new way of bringing a community together.  Parkinson’s disease impacts millions of people all over the globe.  It is an illness that can make feel you feel alone in a very large world. But I am hoping that with the growth of my advocacy in the Parkie world, I will be able to transition my efforts into a platform that can connect us.

For those of you that don’t know me, I will take you through the “Cliff Notes” version.  My name is Allison and I am a 35 year old girl living in Orange County, California.  I was 24 years old when I was diagnosed with colon cancer.  I endured 14 surgeries in a three year period.  I don’t want to jump over this devastating time in my life, but I am trying to keep it short!  Then when I was 32, I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease.  I would like to know who the dealer is in this card game!  After going through Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, I felt it was time to change my life course and completely immerse myself in the Parkinson’s world.

In 2010, I launched a program called “Parkinson’s in Balance”.  The idea was to offer fitness classes, support groups and community events at no cost.  Two years later, it is still running strong and I find myself extending my reach to other parts of the Nation with speaking events and appearances.  I would have never asked for this life, but I wouldn’t change it for a thing!  I have made amazing friends and found the meaning of my life…..helping others.

As this page keeps growing, you will have ways to follow my advocacy and connect with other Parkies from all over the world.  Feel free to leave comments and feedback, because without that, it would just be me rambling!  Enjoy!

We’re listening Allison! You are like a conduit bringing lives together. I agree with you! I have a redirected purpose because of my diagnosis of PD. ( 53 years old, 7 years diagnosed) Those out there, not ready to join a support group or go to events, this can be step one… We are all struggling together to make life fulfilling, one day at a time. Allison, has an infectious excitement over life with a slash of real honesty. The friends I’ve come to love with PD are truly of one accord. Listening ears, raw hurts, real fears, all wrapped in support, understanding, and laughter….Please be encouraged to meet people. It has changed my life and heart attitude. I know it will change yours! GrannyB with PD!

I couldn’t have said it better! Get involved, it helps to know that you are not alone.

You go, girl! Allison, you are a true inspiration to all Parkies, everywhere. Even though we jealously claim you as our own, we know that ultimately, we must share you. Today, Orange County – tomorrow, the World!

Moving With Apple 2017 Workshop

After the great success of our first “Moving with Apple” workshop last August, I was super-duper excited when the team at the Apple store in Irvine, California contacted me to help with creating a second event for people with movement disorders.  This workshop will focus on mind, body and voice… starting the New Year off […]
